3-position light switch question

Posted by Alberta Mike on January 01, 2004 at 13:52:49 from (209.47.89.122):

On most old tractors from the 40's and even into the 50's, the electrical system still used the older-style of 3rd brush generators. While the generator could be adjusted internally for general control, there was additional control through the 3-position light/generator control switch on the dash. My question is this: Were these 3-position light/generator control switches also used on older cars and trucks, say from the 20's and 30's that used 3rd brush generators? Why I ask is because of the large number of hookup terminals on the output side of those 3-position switches. Certain terminals are hot only in certain switch positions. Because tractors of the era didn't really have any additional accessories (other than lights) I am guessing that originally these switches were used on cars and trucks which would have more electrical circuitry and accessories than a tractor would. Anyone know if my guess is maybe correct?
