Need 51' Chevy Stepside bed

I want to make a street rod and need a bed that is about 7 feet long. (I can trade a 62 stepside ford) I would like also to get more power from the truck but I dont want to buy a V-8 unless I have to. Would a straight 6 out of a 52-53 Chevy 2 ton truck work, I dont know what size it is but does anyone think that it would work?
