Re: Ford F250 REPOWERPosted by John McPherson on January 08, 2004 at 18:44:19 from (216.251.171.220): In Reply to: Ford F250 REPOWER posted by Andrew on January 08, 2004 at 18:27:24: You would be adding about 400 to 500 pounds over the front wheels that was not there even if you had a 390 with a cruiseomatic. With the typical drum brakes of that era, you would have more than just your hands full. Even if you had the discs on the front, Ford pickups of that era were never known for short stopping distances. My dad had a 1968 F250 with 1969 drum brakes, and my brother had a 1973 F250 with discs and neither could be considered to be able to stop on a dime, not even a long flattened one. I would not do it, it would be far more work than the returns would warrant. Onan found this out when they considered making repower kits for Jeep CJ's in the early 1980's. If the truck is in really good shape, consider a 429/460 Ford Lima V8, or if it had the 390 FE, consider rebuilding that. 302 is okay, but any amount of mileage is a candidate for a rebuild. a 300 6 is a capable engine, if even a little too restricted for decent performance. Your time has to be considered worth something to you, and also avoidance of headaches has to have some value too. The Detroit is better suited to a larger chassis than the F250. Something on the order of a 500/600 chassis, driveline and brakes would be better suited to an engine and transmission of that much weight too.
