Aprox 20 years ago I repowered an IH 200 4X4(about the same as a 250 Ford)with an identical spec 4-53 detroit. I used a 5 spd direct Clark trans. It had a belt drive vac pump for the power brakes. The truck really did not feel much heavier than the 392-auto it replaced. The thing was noisy, but made a terrific trailer puller with the Detroits low rpm torque. Very few hills that could not be topped in 5 th gear with a 20,000 pound goose neck trailer. Empty mpg went from 8 with the gas engine to aprox20 with the diesel. I used it for 10 years with the 4-53,then when I retired it to short trip farm use I repowered it with a 427 then 460 gas with 4 spd manual. Back to 7 mpg and not near the hill pulling torque. I regretted the change. It would have been worth the constant chasing of small oil leaks and noise (very macho sounding if you didn't have to listen to it for too many hours :)to keep that stump pulling little Detroit
