86 chevy vacuum ?( transmision )

I have an 86 chevy that had to have the engine overhauled my son and I took it out and did the work we put it back together but we had a box of parts left over that he said we don't need {emision $%&t} we put a new edelbrock carb on it it runs real good but when you step on the gas it don't shift down and the cable is hooked up we never took any vacuum lines off of the trans. but it lookes like it should have one on the top it is a 4 speed automatic does anyone have any ideas? thanks Mike
