Truck goes DeadPosted by Michael Soldan on January 31, 2004 at 11:25:33 from (216.46.130.10):
This is a strange one. My Dodge (1980) will go dead, no lights no horn no interiors lights no ignition or starter..sounds like a bad battery or bad ground...it isn't , it will then start run a few minutes and everything goes blank and I mean everything. We load tested the battery, cleaned terminals, even ran extra ground via battery cables. What I don't understand is how can everything be dead, with one exception. I have a light bar on top of my roll bar that is wired seperately with a relay and switch. When the truck goes dead the light bar will light up( which tells me that battery and positive and negative are all good...what is controlling the system that blanks out headlights, starter and all electricals on the vehicle? (with the exception of the separately wired lights. My boss has been a mechanic for 30 years and he is just shaking his head. I had the truck running this morning, once for about 30 seconds and once for about 2 minutes, then it would just go dead. I did an alternator check and its putting out 14.4 volts on high idle, the battery spins it over and it fires right up...then clunk!!......I'm stumped...Mike in Exeter Ontario
