Changing Transmissions

Posted by JC on March 09, 2004 at 23:23:36 from (63.245.139.100):

I have an old Studebaker 1/2 ton pickup truck that has been changed quite a bit through the years. It started out with a 4 speed tranny, and later it was converted to a 3 speed with overdrive.
The rear end gearing was changed to increase speed for highway use.

I was thinking about taking it back to a 4 speed as the 3 speed isn't really heavy enough for what I use the truck for, but I really don't want to kill my highway speed.

How much does the transmission effect speed, or is it mainly the rear end gear ratio?

The 4 speed is a Borg Warner and is straight geared.

Any advice would be appreciated!
