Electrical problem , 51 Chevrolet

I Bought a 1951 Chevrolet , Person I bought from wasn't sure of battery placement . Said it ran on Neg and Pos grounds ! The battery is always dead . When I connect the posts , It gives off a light spark , The charge guage reads discharge (When NOT running) I put it in Neg ground ran for awhile , still the same thing . Any help PLEASE !
