I put a 300 in a 70 maverick with the grabber package. Had Jahns build a set of 12/1 pistons for it,and used a Cliffords cam and 4bbl manifold with a small Holley. The head had a mild port and polish with oversize stainless steel valves. In that light car it was a real runner. Not all rpm and no torque like a 302 V8,more like 3/4 of a 400 V8. Half throttle would light up the tires.
When I decided to modify the 292 in my 80 GMC K35 crew cab for dual fuel(gasoline/propane) I knew I had to modify the engine to to get more air flow as propane vapor displaces a little air and cuts power a bit. I did a mild port and polish to the head with Chevy V8 1.9 and 1.6 valves added. I used a Cliffords intake with a big Motorcraft 2 bbl on it which flows a lot more air than the 292 carb, and has a diaphram type acelerator pump which will not wear out when running with no gas in the carb while running on propane (90% of the time). I added headers and dual exhaust. The engine has more power on propane than it had on gasoline before the modifications, and a lot more on gasoline. It does a good job of pulling this 6400 pound truck even with a loaded gooseneck trailer on behind. The engine has over 160,000 miles on it since the modifications.
